On this episode of the Future Construct Podcast (30 min interview) we spotlight Leigh Christy, Principal at Perkins&Will and Head of their Innovation Incubator. Perkins&Will is a global design practice founded in 1935 and has more Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited professionals than any other design firm in North America. We learn about Leigh's work in her roles at Perkins&Will as well as her experience as an adjunct professor and hear her perspectives on the direction companies should be taking toward the evolution of technology.
- How companies should be thinking about responsibility and sustainability as components of innovation
- The role of technology in designing and what processes in automation or technology focus on visualization, helping with AR and VR
- How technology is a toolbox for solving industry problems
- Closing feedback loops to eliminate repeating mistakes, which can (and will) enhance the global landscape
Leigh works at the blurred intersection of architecture and urban planning to unlock the restorative possibilities of design. For both private and public clients, her leadership team encompasses design, management, and technical realms at a variety of scales, offering her a multidisciplinary diversity of thought that's both forward-looking and comprehensive. Using research and actual project data as a basis, Leigh frequently publishes articles and presents on issues of social and environmental resilience at many levels.
She was an adjunct faculty member of Woodbury University from 2008 - 2014, lecturing on design theory, and continues to sit on design juries across the country. In addition to Los Angeles, Leigh has also practiced in Rockland, Maine; San Francisco, California; New York, New York; and Akron, Ohio.
Additionally, Leigh is the head of Perkins&Will's Innovation Incubator, a micro-grant program, and sits on the firm’s Research Board and Technology Council. She is also a member of the AIA California's arcCA Digest Editorial Board and the Committee on the Environment (COTE), as well as the ULI Los Angeles Innovation Committee.

4:07 Also you've been an adjunct professor as well, so what was some of the work that you did there?
7:40 So, let's talk a little bit about the technology and where you see technology's role in the way that you're designing today and are there processes that you're seeing in automation or visualization. What are some of the trends in tools that you're going to be using over the next couple of years?
18:05 So you talked about the incubator a little bit. What are the types of companies that you're drawn to for the incubator and maybe share some of the ones that you're particularly excited about?
20:42 Do you think that the incubator program helps everyone at Perkins&Will feel like they're a part of the future of the company?
27:44 Projecting yourself 15 to 20 years in the future, and you could bring with you any service or product that just makes you happy and makes your life better, what would it be and what would it do?
